    Biography

Hunter S. Thompson (July 18, 1937 – February 20, 2005) was an American journalist and author born in Louisville, Kentucky, and the originator of Gonzo journalism, a style in which the reporter becomes a central participant in the story. After gaining attention with Hell's Angels, he published Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, first serialized in Rolling Stone, followed by Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail '72. His work was adapted into the films Where the Buffalo Roam, Terry Gilliam's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, in which he made a brief appearance, and The Rum Diary. He died by suicide at his home in Woody Creek, Colorado.
