**Sundar Raj** (born 1951) is a veteran Indian actor who works predominantly in Kannada cinema, with occasional appearances in Tamil and Telugu films. With a career spanning nearly six decades and over 180 films, he is one of Sandalwood's most respected character actors, renowned for his versatility across parallel, commercial, and middle-class dramatic roles. Originally from Srirangam, Tamil Nadu, he moved with his family to Bengaluru at a young age. He honed his acting craft on the amateur stage, working closely within B. V. Karanth's theatre circle before entering the film industry. He made his first screen appearance as a child artist in the historical classic *Immadi Pulikeshi* (1967). Sundar Raj rose to prominence during the golden era of Kannada parallel cinema in the 1970s, featuring in landmark realistic films such as Girish Karnad's *Kaadu* (1973), B. V. Karanth's *Chomana Dudi* (1975), and *Tabbaliyu Neenade Magane* (1977). In 1978, veteran filmmaker K. Balachander introduced him to Tamil and bilingual audiences with the critically acclaimed *Thappu Thalangal* (released simultaneously in Kannada as *Thappida Thala*). He followed this with standout roles in Girish Karnad's samurai-inspired drama *Ondanondu Kaladalli* (1978), Mahendran's classic Tamil drama *Uthiripookkal* (1979), and T. S. Nagabharana's *Bangarada Jinke* (1980). Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he became a dependable presence in mainstream cinema, balancing antagonist, comedic, and pivotal supporting roles. His key film credits from this period include *Chandanada Gombe* (1979), K. Balachander's *Benkiyalli Aralida Hoovu* (1983), T. S. Nagabharana's *Banker Margayya* (1983), Rajkumar's *Ondu Muttina Kathe* (1987), Ravichandran's musical *Kindari Jogi* (1989), and *Aakasmika* (1993). He also featured in prominent comedic ensembles such as *Kurigalu Saar Kurigalu* (2001) and political dramas like *Mathadana* (2001). On television, he earned widespread acclaim for his work in T. N. Seetharam's cult daily serial *Mayamruga* (1998) as well as *Chidambara Rahasya*. In recent years, he has continued to remain active on screen with roles in films like *Aatagara* (2015), *College Kumar* (2017), *Case of Kondana* (2024), and *Laughing Buddha* (2024). Outside acting, Sundar Raj has served as the Secretary of the Karnataka Film Artists Association (KFAA). He is married to veteran actress Pramila Joshai, and their daughter is prominent South Indian actress Meghana Raj.
